Reaming a Carbon Frame Shell: Part 1 Canyon Aeroroad BB Removal

December 28, 2022

In this video we're removing the old bottom bracket and going over some of the common removal pitfalls to avoid. In this series we are going start to finish on a Canyon Aeroroad CF SLX disc Di2 bottom bracket install. We're spending a lot of time on BB86 and BB92 in recent videos because they are prolific AND because we see more out-of-spec bottom bracket shells in bikes featuring this format than others. Fear not, there's a method to what may look like madness at first. Enjoy

This plastic Shimano bottom bracket is pretty typical. It's like the performance is never that great, but it's never that bad. Sort of very lukewarm. They are also extremely difficult to get out. There is a special tool that's rather pricey that they make to take this out. We have it -but I'm not going to use it right now. I'm going to show you guys how to do it just with this. But this thing's going to come out in pieces- that is completely normal don't worry about it. It made a liar out of me, but that's okay because normally it's extremely easy to break this thing up into pieces when you're trying to get it out. So I'm going to go ahead and do it.  I'm going to go ahead and do the second side right now because I want to look inside here. You see it's kind of messy in there I might need to go ahead and give it a little illumination say so we got a lot of wires and stuff like that but you can see where I want to get on it I want to get on it right there okay right on right by what would be the bearing backstop okay that is the strongest area that's with the thickest amount of material and a nice square face to strike against you notice I like to look inside with a flashlight. That's important because this Canyon right here it doesn't have a tube going from side to side so if you weren't paying attention you could actually end up doing this right here up against the carpet if you're just kind of like if you're just kind of like oh you know what i mean look inside it's a great way to avoid a huge disaster knocking a hole through your brand new frame but and you also don't want to accidentally get a uh a di2 wire kind of caught in between the punch and what you're hitting because that actually will cut it and then uh this sucker's just gonna fly right out of here in just a sec and that's it made a liar out of me normally it comes out in pieces so let's go on to the next stage
